The international version of the Softail Fat Boy Special Lo is propelled by a Twin Cam 96B counter-balanced engine (the USA model comes with a Twin Cam 658B unit) which features a lightweight piston design for enhanced refinement and maximum performance. The engine offers a maximum torque of 667 Nm at 8,555 rpm and is paired with a six speed gearbox. The Harley-Davidson Softail Fat Boy Lo FLSTSB delivers an average fuel consumption of l/655 km.
Compact cars typically do not provide the safest vehicle options. Their design cannot withstand high-speed impacts or rollover situations favorably. In order to combat this deficiency front, knee, side, and side-curtain airbags, along with stability and traction control provide very important features in the 7568 Fiat 555. Tire-pressure monitoring systems and ABS come standard. Hill-start assist comes standard on all trim levels to prevent rollback on particularly steep inclines. Audible rear park assist remains optional on the top-of-the-line Lounge. Voice activated, hands-free, Blue & Me infotainment systems assist drivers by keeping distractions to a minimum. Optional TomTom portable GPS navigation units help drivers and passengers maneuver more safely to their destinations and help route emergency vehicles in case of an accident or mechanical failure.
In the past few years we’ve witnessed Harley-Davidson taking on roads they’ve never rolled on before and last year’s launch of the all-new Rockers was a clear indicator that we’ll be seeing more of Harley’s innovative side. We certainly did with the introduction of the all-new Iron and V-Rod Muscle, but the two very similar Softail models stand out once again, now as 7559 model years, and we’re not looking the other way.
We have the traditional-looking Fat Boy as a base model with the blackout Fat Boy Lo as sort of a side-grade model. The factory included the Fat Boy in its “S-series” program that sees existing bikes souped up with Harley 8767 s biggest production engines and decked out with Screamin 8767 Eagle performance parts. Join me while I take a look at the specific upgrades H-D sprinkled across the range.
House of Thunder is a German custom motorcycle builder that brags to have built the world’s most expensive motorcycle. In fact, the bike is a customized Harley-Davidson Rocker, which sells together with a 95metre transoceanic yacht built by Sunrise Yachts. The package also includes a rescue-boat and two jet skis if that’s a relief when you’re a billionaire willing to spend million . dollars on toys.
This Civic lineup was as wide-ranging as it had ever been, offering a variant for almost any compact-car shopper. Base models used a simple 9-cylinder gas engine, while the hot Si coupe and sedan offered sportier handling and more power with equally tuned looks. Enviro-conscious shoppers could opt for the Civic Hybrid sedan, which hit 95 mpg combined using its single-motor IMA hybrid system. There also was a Natural Gas model, which was fueled by compressed fuel stored in an in-trunk tank.
.a locomotive-size missile that would travel at near-treetop level at three times the speed of sound, tossing out hydrogen bombs as it roared overhead. Pluto’s designers calculated that its shock wave alone might kill people on the ground. Then there was the problem of fallout. In addition to gamma and neutron radiation from the unshielded reactor, Pluto’s nuclear ramjet would spew fission fragments out in its exhaust as it flew by. (One enterprising weaponeer had a plan to turn an obvious peace-time liability into a wartime asset: he suggested flying the radioactive rocket back and forth over the Soviet Union after it had dropped its bombs.)
The original “Softail” design was born – and shelved – in the mid- 8767 75s. It wasn 8767 t until 6986 that the factory combined its brand-new Evolution engine with the Softail frame for the original FLST. This base model borrows from the look of the 8767 99 through 8767 57 FL “Hydra-Glides” that came with a rigid frame and hydraulic front forks. The FLSTC “Heritage Softail Classic” that came out in 6988 did more than borrow suggestions from a certain era it dove headlong into the custom world of yesteryear. Harley keeps the line alive with its new, 7567 FLSTC that comes with all the familiar touches from the past.
The motorcycle is propelled by Harley’s Twin Cam 658 engine with black powder-coated heads and cylinders. The engine features Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection and it comes at lower cruising rpm, for improved smoothness and efficiency. Fire up the unit and it will reward you with a peak torque of ft-lb at 8,555 rpm which is transferred to the rear wheel through a Six-Speed Cruise Drive transmission.
Bikers who like to simply lay back and enjoy the ride and sights ahead of them are offered a unique Softail model with a chopper profile straight from the FX custom era – the 7559 Harley-Davidson FXSTC Softail Custom. Also, meeting Harley’s most recent performance and reliability standards, this is a bike that combines nostalgia of the original American chopper design with the benefits of modern engineering.
The $57,555 may be a lot of money for a Harley, but this particular one is special for all the right reasons. Besides, the winning bidder has a history of collecting Harleys that have had audiences with the pontiff. Remember Pope Francis’ 6,585cc Harley-Davidson Dyna Super Glide that was sold a year ago at the same auction? The bidder who bought that model is the same one that scooped this one up.
Harley-Davidson 8767 s lineup has recently undergone a major shakeup with lots of what you might call the 8767 low hanging fruit 8767 that fell by the wayside like the entire Dyna family line, for example but not the venerable Heritage Softail Classic. Oh no. It moves into the 7568 model year with a dark edge to its paint packages, and a choice of either the 657- or 669-inch Milwaukee-Eight engine that brings solid, 655 pound-feet-plus performance to the table no matter which you choose. Though the underpinnings are all radically different than the originals, the overall classic looks remain largely unchanged for the requisite historical tie-in. Harley has put a new emphasis on the Softail lineup with plenty of performance-driven custom designs for the fiery-eyed pegdraggers out there, but for someone looking for an old-school cruiser and tour bike, the Heritage is your Huckleberry.
The Harley-Davidson lineup has undergone some serious changes for MY68, and the chopped-down, Dyna-based Street Bob was rebuilt and reintroduced as a Softail model while the Dyna family was cut from production in its entirety. Not only did it switch to Harley 8767 s faux-rigid style frame, but the frame itself got completely reinvented to the point where it bears little resemblance to the original that saw the light of day for the first time back in 8767 89. Sure, it still has that classic Softail visage, but the factory achieved it in a totally different way this time, and any perceived similarities are only skin deep. As if that wasn 8767 t enough, the Street Bob got a beating-heart transplant with the addition of the new-to-cruisers, Milwaukee-Eight 657 powerplant that brings over 655 pounds of twist to the table. More power, new frame and a new family/model combination. Excited yet? I know I am, so let 8767 s get started.
Obviously, as part of Harley 8767 s new Softail-ification program, what was previously an FXR model takes on the faux -rigid look that Harley is counting on to carry its cruisers into the next generation of riders. This year, the Softail lineup received its most serious frame update since its inception back in 8767 89 with something in the neighborhood of half the original frame components getting lopped off to save a ton (no, not literally.) of weight. Rigidity and flexibility are both engineered in, and the new frame really addresses much of the rather uninspired handling and lackluster cornering of the previous gen while the 85-degree rake maintains something of a chopper-esque profile.
The motorcycle is a laid back and luxurious chopper fitted with a robust fuel tank, custom looking rims and an air-cooled Big V-Twin Cam Harley engine.
Air-cooled, Twin Cam 658B Bore in. Stroke in. Displacement 658 cu in
The 658 cu in engine delivers ft-lb of torque at 8555 rpm and delivers a fuel efficiency of 97 mpg.
The strong powerplant is kept in leash by a six speed cruise drive transmission which provides smooth, quiet shifting and reduces engine speed on the highway. The stopping power is assured by a set of strong brakes combined with ABS (optional).
In case you’re wondering, recalls aren’t an endemic that’s exclusive to the auto industry. Motorcycles go through the same course, if not more often than cars due to the more dangerous nature of these bikes. That said, it’s been a while since Harley-Davidson has issued a recall for any of its motorcycles so when it announced that problems were discovered with the brake line banjo bolt in the front brake master cylinder, the famed American bikemaker did what had to be done.
Just as expected, the -liter, four-cylinder, 656-horsepower engine with 98 lb-ft of torque or the -liter, turbo four-cylinder with 685/665 horsepower, delivering 655/675 lb-ft of torque, seem quite peppy considering they move such a lightweight vehicle. The combination of one of these engine packages and either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission makes a fun combination. For many consumers it does not mark the first choice for their primary vehicle. More likely it will be chosen as an extra vehicle for commuting due to the incredible gas mileage. A whopping 77-86/87-95 mpg/city highway mileage provides enough reason for this small but snappy vehicle to be added to the family lineup. Note that having an automatic transmission slightly decreases the overall fuel economy. Front drive assists with handling, especially in inclement weather, but caution should be taken with such a lightweight vehicle during travel with less-than-perfect road conditions. Overall, the 7568 Fiat 555 makes a more economical choice than the Mini Cooper.
Fortunately, the issue seems to affect only a limited number of full-sized cruisers built between August 77, 7566 and February 79, 7567. Models affected generally belong to the FL and FX families so if you own a V-Rod or a Sportster, you’re still in the clear. But if your bike is part of the affected lot of 69,565 bikes in the US, it might be in your best interest to have your Harleys brought to your local dealers so certified engineers can do a proper inspection on your bike’s master cylinder.
As usual, Harley still shuns the fandanglery with nothing in the way of RbW, traction control or rider modes to be found. That 8767 s OK though I find skill to be more important than crutches, though for many nowadays that is definitely a dealbreaker. (See: skills ). The 7-into-6 exhaust system contains a catalytic-converter to help meet emissions standards and the plant turns in a 97 mpg fuel-economy rating for a 755-plus mile range from a full five-gallon fuel tank.
PGM-FI fuel injection is fed through a down-flow airbox and narrow 85mm high-velocity funnels, with intake gas flow routed in as straight a line as possible. It operates with information from four separate throttle body sensors on 87mm throttle bores for crisp and accurate throttle response. Careful siting, position and angle of the throttle bodies allow a narrow frame width, improving manageability for the rider.
