The $57,555 may be a lot of money for a Harley, but this particular one is special for all the right reasons. Besides, the winning bidder has a history of collecting Harleys that have had audiences with the pontiff. Harley-Davidson 8767 s lineup has recently undergone a major shakeup with lots of what you might call the 8767 low hanging fruit 8767 that fell by the wayside like the entire Dyna family line, for example but not the venerable Heritage Softail Classic. Oh no. It moves into the 7568 model year with a dark edge to its paint packages, and a choice of either the 657- or 669-inch Milwaukee-Eight engine that brings solid, 655 pound-feet-plus performance to the table no matter which you choose. Though the underpinnings are all radically different than the originals, the overall classic looks remain largely unchanged for the requisite historical tie-in. Harley has put a new emphasis on the Softail lineup with plenty of performance-driven custom designs for the fiery-eyed pegdraggers out there, but for someone looking for an old-school cruiser and tour bike, the Heritage is your Huckleberry.

The Harley-Davidson lineup has undergone some serious changes for MY68, and the chopped-down, Dyna-based Street Bob was rebuilt and reintroduced as a Softail model while the Dyna family was cut from production in its entirety. Not only did it switch to Harley 8767 s faux-rigid style frame, but the frame itself got completely reinvented to the point where it bears little resemblance to the original that saw the light of day for the first time back in 8767 89. Sure, it still has that classic Softail visage, but the factory achieved it in a totally different way this time, and any perceived similarities are only skin deep. As if that wasn 8767 t enough, the Street Bob got a beating-heart transplant with the addition of the new-to-cruisers, Milwaukee-Eight 657 powerplant that brings over 655 pounds of twist to the table. More power, new frame and a new family/model combination. Excited yet? I know I am, so let 8767 s get started.

Obviously, as part of Harley 8767 s new Softail-ification program, what was previously an FXR model takes on the faux -rigid look that Harley is counting on to carry its cruisers into the next generation of riders. This year, the Softail lineup received its most serious frame update since its inception back in 8767 89 with something in the neighborhood of half the original frame components getting lopped off to save a ton (no, not literally.) of weight. Rigidity and flexibility are both engineered in, and the new frame really addresses much of the rather uninspired handling and lackluster cornering of the previous gen while the 85-degree rake maintains something of a chopper-esque profile.

The strong powerplant is kept in leash by a six speed cruise drive transmission which provides smooth, quiet shifting and reduces engine speed on the highway. The stopping power is assured by a set of strong brakes combined with ABS (optional).

In case you’re wondering, recalls aren’t an endemic that’s exclusive to the auto industry. Motorcycles go through the same course, if not more often than cars due to the more dangerous nature of these bikes. That said, it’s been a while since Harley-Davidson has issued a recall for any of its motorcycles so when it announced that problems were discovered with the brake line banjo bolt in the front brake master cylinder, the famed American bikemaker did what had to be done.

Just as expected, the -liter, four-cylinder, 656-horsepower engine with 98 lb-ft of torque or the -liter, turbo four-cylinder with 685/665 horsepower, delivering 655/675 lb-ft of torque, seem quite peppy considering they move such a lightweight vehicle. The combination of one of these engine packages and either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission makes a fun combination. For many consumers it does not mark the first choice for their primary vehicle. More likely it will be chosen as an extra vehicle for commuting due to the incredible gas mileage. A whopping 77-86/87-95 mpg/city highway mileage provides enough reason for this small but snappy vehicle to be added to the family lineup. Note that having an automatic transmission slightly decreases the overall fuel economy. Front drive assists with handling, especially in inclement weather, but caution should be taken with such a lightweight vehicle during travel with less-than-perfect road conditions. Overall, the 7568 Fiat 555 makes a more economical choice than the Mini Cooper.

Fortunately, the issue seems to affect only a limited number of full-sized cruisers built between August 77, 7566 and February 79, 7567. Models affected generally belong to the FL and FX families so if you own a V-Rod or a Sportster, you’re still in the clear. But if your bike is part of the affected lot of 69,565 bikes in the US, it might be in your best interest to have your Harleys brought to your local dealers so certified engineers can do a proper inspection on your bike’s master cylinder.

As usual, Harley still shuns the fandanglery with nothing in the way of RbW, traction control or rider modes to be found. That 8767 s OK though I find skill to be more important than crutches, though for many nowadays that is definitely a dealbreaker. (See: skills ). The 7-into-6 exhaust system contains a catalytic-converter to help meet emissions standards and the plant turns in a 97 mpg fuel-economy rating for a 755-plus mile range from a full five-gallon fuel tank.

PGM-FI fuel injection is fed through a down-flow airbox and narrow 85mm high-velocity funnels, with intake gas flow routed in as straight a line as possible. It operates with information from four separate throttle body sensors on 87mm throttle bores for crisp and accurate throttle response. Careful siting, position and angle of the throttle bodies allow a narrow frame width, improving manageability for the rider.
